BBM'S The Boxing's Dead week: The Greatest Fight You Never Knew About
One of the things that lead to the
death of boxing was its lack of being approachable to the causal fan.
Sure the boxing aficionado’s will tell you all the dodging and
weaving of the sweet science is what makes it an art. That may be, but it is a lack of action that lead to its current state, where the
two biggest fighters on the planet are kinda boring to watch.
Meanwhile anyone who wants to look through the robust catalog of
boxing history always ends up at the same Ali Frazier fights, Tyson
super knock out, or some 1940's boxing that looks more like an old
wrestling match than boxing.
Often looked over are amazing fights
from people who the public never really knew. So with that in mind
BBM would like to come with us and pull up a ringside stool as we
show you:
Hagler vs Hearns
the best fight you have never heard of.
In May 1982 the biggest names in
boxing's welterweight/middleweight divisions were:
Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto
Duran.
Ironic that in this era the best fight would be between two
would be contenders.
Hagler and Hearns both would have
preferred a fight with Leonard. And prior to the fight most fans
would have agreed. Hagler and Hearns had originally been scheduled to
fight in May 1982, but Hearns suffered a right hand injury, forcing
it to be canceled, Hagler was pissed.
They both continued fighting other
opponents, but then, Hagler-Hearns was eventually made again, this
time for April 15, 1985, an aggressive campaign was launched to
promote the fight. Including a two-week media tour to more than 20
cities across the USA.
Hagler and Hearns went face-to-face,
insulting each other while answering the same questions. They grew
tired of each other and got so deeply under each others skin that
they nearly came to blows during the promotion tour. More than once.
By the time they got to the ring, they
were looking to kill each other. And America was looking towards one
of the best fights in Boxing history.
Judge for yourself.
Hagler VS Hearns
"That was an entire fight
accomplished in three minutes," Al Michaels
Why yes it was Al, yes it was. There
you have it a capsule of hate that reminds us what we used to like
about boxing.
Too bad you can't turn back time. But you know
whatever we have UFC right?
